Is it just me or has everyone moved on from setting resolutions and totally let go of the whole New Year, New You thing ? People really loathe change. And mention growth through self awareness ? Get out of here !
Not me. Resolutions, Intentions, Goals, Call them what you will. I am not letting go. By the end of the year I need a reset. In 2022 I AM determined to get that weekly cardio in and I have made a firm decision to forego sugar in my morning coffee. Yes, I will meditate daily and I will complete MOVE - 30 days of Yoga, https://do.yogawithadriene.com/move - this one I am always excited about! I have some business goals in mind as well.
While it may be inviting to not make any commitments and certainly much easier not to self-examine and uncover some way I could better myself, I flail without purpose. Like many others, even if I do start the year with good intentions, life inevitably gets in the way and somewhere between summer and the Holidays I have pretty much fallen off every wagon I've ever ridden. For me, this is what makes the New Year an excellent time to do a retrospective on the previous year and begin to start anew by adjusting Ch’i and setting intentions for my future goals. The 2022 new moon in Capricorn will add some wind to our sails and provide support and order to our goals so that what we start now may be fully formed by the Supermoon on July 13th, 2022. Now is the time for Empowered Arrangement!
man·i·fes·ta·tion
/ˌmanəfəˈstāSH(ə)n,ˌmanəˌfesˈtāSH(ə)n/
An event, action, or object that clearly shows or embodies something, especially a theory or an abstract idea.
What is my favorite thing to do besides clear clutter ? So glad you asked. Make lists ! So before ringing in the New Year grab your fav writing utensil and accoutrement and start jotting. Here are some prompts to get you started;
What worked ?
Looking back on 2021 identify the great things, the success markers, your list of awesome moments both, big and small. Pick out the personal wins from the past year and honor them.
Did you get out of your pajama bottoms and comb your hair before logging in to work ? Hurray!
Did you stick with your daily meditation practice which eleviated anxiety and cleared a path for motivation and fresh ideas ? Namaste !
Did getting to the gym before work help you get those workouts in before your daily schedule got in the way ? Insert fist bump here !
Maybe you said a firm and clear NO to the umpteenth invite to volunteer or make a donation realizing your time and finances required it. And maybe, just maybe, you didn’t even feel guilty about it afterwards.Take a bow!
What did not serve you ?
Ok, so getting into the gym at 5:30 AM every day lasted for about two months. But you felt great during that time and you understand that you need to get that exercise in so you can be the healthiest version of yourself.
You tried to decrease the amount of seated hours at your desk by standing up while working You can’t chew gum and walk at the same time. This was a lofty goal to begin with. Running while typing at your treadmill/stand up desk was not a win. Let it go.
What boundaries need to be set and enforced ?
How many events, requests, ideas, projects did you say yes to in 2021 when you meant no, wanted to say no, knew that you did not have the time, finances or emotional capacity to commit but, said yes to anyway?
Maybe you need to tell a loved one you can not do something they expect of you simply because you are related and “that is what family is for”.
Do you respond to calls and texts when in the middle of meals, or running errands because the other person will get upset if you don’t do so immediately ?
Is it time to let your spouse know that even though you work from home you can't be available to make gourmet meals every night ?
What can I take accountability for / improve upon ?
All of the above. First of all, pat yourself on the back. Bravo ! for everything on your list. Even when we don’t succeed we are hopefully learning and growing. This is why I find this exercise at the New Year so rewarding!
Maybe you gave up on the early morning gym class but will set a goal to get 150 or moderate to 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week. (I read this on the American Heart Association website and it resonated with me at this stage in my life when estrogen levels are waning and I need to protect my heart!) Ok, so you learned from last year that a 4:30 AM wake up is not sustainable, but you have now identified an alternative for this year that should be.
You know your 30 days of Yoga works like a charm. You do it every year in January and then throughout the year periodically when a new one comes out at fwfg.com. This year aim to get on the mat daily, starting with meditation and ending with a yoga sequence as often as you can. This is something you know is attainable and keeps you grounded and centered.
In 2022 say what you mean and mean what you say. Don’t accept every invitation and know that a response is not really owed to anyone. What is that saying - Those that matter won't mind and those that mind, don’t matter ? Hey, I am not telling you it is ok to completely ignore acceptable ettiquette or go around being an asshole but, if they aren’t paying your bills….....don't let them rent space in your head. Take care of yourself first. You in no way have to participate in every vent session, gossip go round or pity party that you are invited to. It took me a long time to learn this. In fact, I am still learning. In 2022 I vow to disengage from what is not serving me and not be the fuel to aforementioned fires.
